Do you know how to house train your cat?

Cats, and their eccentric ways, make great housemates whether it’s their crazy antics or having a purring sleeping kitty curled up on your lap, you can’t beat having them as a pet.

If you’re lucky enough to be a cat guardian, you know that sharing a space with a feline does come with one challenge. The litter box. But, how do you house train a cat? Here are eight cat potty training tips:

Keep it clean

Cats are particular creatures and will not use a dirty litter box. Who can blame them though? Would you use facilities that weren’t cleaned on the reg? Keep your kitty’s box clean by scooping any mess daily, or more often if required. A dirty litter box is the main reason for cats not using it and going elsewhere.

Check that box

Not sure what size litter box you need to get? The general rule of thumb is that the box should be one and a half times the length of your cat. If you can’t remember how long your feline companion is, rather go bigger to be safe. Also, if you have more than one cat, you’re going to have to get a box per kitty plus one extra.

Location, location, location

To your feline friend, that litter box is like a prime place of realty. Location matters. Make sure the box is in a convenient location that your cat can get to easily and that you can clean easily too.

Choose the right litter

If you’ve ever gone shopping for kitty litter, you know that there are a plethora of choices available. But, how do you know which one is the best option for your house panther? Most cats prefer a small, grained litter. As for brands? You’re just going to have to go with trial and error until your cat chooses one that they prefer.

Let’s get down to business

Take your kitty companion to the litter box after each meal and every nap (yes, we know that cats nap a lot). If the litter box is in a separate room, close the door. This isn’t to protect your proud feline’s modesty, but to keep them from wandering off. Your cats will get the idea and start using their box.

Praise them

Don’t forget that cats were worshipped by the Egyptians. Your feline hasn’t forgotten. Praise them when they successfully start using the litter box use treats, play games, and pat them. Worship and praise your cat for doing good in a way that they’d approve of.

Toilet training a cat?

Not sure if all this litter stuff is for you and your cat? The internet is littered with videos and articles on the best way to toilet-train your cat. The jury is still out on whether this is the best thing for your kitty though. If you would like to explore this option, there are plenty of cat toilet training kits available for you to try.

There are no bad cats

Whatever the internet may have you believe about cats and their nature, they’re actually sensitive souls. Never yell or hit your cat if they have an accident. Start at step 1, or, chat with your vet if you are concerned.

As far as companions go, felines don’t demand all that much. To keep them purring happily all year long is easy. Keep your cat content with good, high-quality food, and a clean litter box.
